Looking at data acquired from a national sample of students, a typical 3rd grader will have a Lexile score of between 330L and 700L.
A text's Lexile Framework works in increments of 10 with 10L being the lowest. Measures below 10L are classified as BR or Beginning Reader. The ideal for both reader and text is to match both their assessed Lexile measure.
Books with a text difficulty of between 190L and 530L would be appropriate for children in the first grade based on their reading skills, and once accurate Lexile scores are determined, educators can suggest books that will provide a decent challenge in that range.
The average 4th grader will have a Lexile score of 445L to 810L. However, this is true for around 50% of students, with around 25% being below the average, while the other 25% are likely to be above the average. The same study showcased that students can be up to 250L above or below the average.
Range of Typical reading Levels in Second Grade
In the fall, second graders typically independently read at a Level 18. By the end of second grade, a typical second grader will independently read at Level 28.
In the 7th grade, studies using a national sample of students have shown that typically readers will score at a Lexile level between 735L and 1065L over the course of the year.
Your average reader in Grade 5 will fall between 565L and 910L, though there will be readers who fall below the average, and others who are reading at a more advanced level.
What is a common Lexile score?
Lexile measures are represented by a number followed by an “L” (such as “800L”) and range from below 0L for beginning readers to above 1600L. Research shows that 1300L or above is the target Lexile measure for students to be ready for college and career in reading.
The series is written at a Lexile level of 870L, meaning that an average 8th grader should be able to read these books with moderate ease.
3rd Grade Reading Level
3rd Graders are comfortable reading simple chapter books on their own. They continue to need lots of practice and time reading aloud as well. At the library look for books 2.2 – 3.9, Guided Reading level L-P, and Lexile 400-650.
The lettered reading levels correlating to third grade are N, O and P. So, typically, a child should be at a level N in the fall and advance to level P by the end of the year. However, some children may be below or above this range.
According to the Lexile® Framework for Reading, "There is no direct correspondence between a specific Lexile measure and a specific grade level.
A Lexile measure can be interpreted as the level of book that a student can read with 75% comprehension. It is a useful tool for teachers, parents, and students to help gauge where students are reading, where they should be, monitor their progress, and decide on a plan to help them move forward.
In kindergarten, many children begin at guided reading Level A and work up to Level D. Books at these levels feature plenty of pictures for support, repetitive sentences and words, limited text, and large font. If your child is not ready for independent reading, be sure to still fit in plenty of family read-aloud time.
Elementary Level: Children ages 8 to 12, or 4th through 6th grades. These children read sentences of approximately 10 words, with the maximum number of words being 20. Most books written at this level range between 20,000 and 40,000 words.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has a Lexile score of 880L. This means that the book is appropriate for fifth and sixth grade readers. This book has one of the lowest Lexile scores of the series, tying with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
What Lexile level is 6th?
In the 6th grade, higher performers should be looking to achieve Lexile scores of around 1000L by the end of the year, with the average scores being over 665L. Yearly growth in the 6th grade falls under 100L typically, with expected growth at 1.7L per week.
Fourth grade average reading levels range between 18 to 28 on PM benchmark levels or up to level 40 on DRA levels. Grade 4 reading levels can vary greatly between individual students. Grade four reading tuition starts to move focus from phonics and reading skills to reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Reading in First Grade
While classroom experience can vary depending on where students live, whether they attend public or private schools and other factors, education experts say first graders should be able to read at least 150 high-frequency words by the end of the year.
A first grader should be at a reading level between 3 to 12. Higher reading levels indicate that they're near the top of their class, but there's always room for growth. In some cases, your child might fall below or rise above the range. Practice and proper tutoring will improve their reading level.
Fluency is, quite simply, the ability to read quickly and accurately, something that many second graders begin to do by the end of the school year. In the decoding department, second graders should be able to easily distinguish between short and long vowel sounds when reading common one-syllable words.
The Lexile score, or measure, describes your child's reading ability and matches them with books and other reading materials. This measure ranges anywhere from 0L to 2000L. Kids are encouraged to read within their Lexile “range” — 50L above to 100L below their actual level.
