What grade level is a 1300 Lexile?
NOTE: By the end of the 11th grade, students should reach the college- and career-ready reading level (1300 Lexiles).
In the 7th grade, studies using a national sample of students have shown that typically readers will score at a Lexile level between 735L and 1065L over the course of the year. Growth of around 69L is generally achievable for 7th graders should students be progressing at around 1.3L per week.

Research shows that 1300L or above is the target Lexile measure for students to be ready for college and career in reading.
There is no specific "gifted" measure for Lexile scoring. However, scoring better than at least 87 percent of others at the same grade level is considered "Advanced." 1321L and above marks an advanced 12th grader, and more than 400L shows that a first grader is similarly outstanding.
On average, a 7th grader should read between 150 and 200 words per minute (wpm). Many districts consider 150 wpm to be the baseline for independent reading.
4th Grade: 38-40. 5th Grade: 40-50. 6th Grade: 50-60. 7th & 8th Grade: 60-80.
6th Grade: 1030L - 1340L.

Why is my Lexile so high?
A high Lexile measure for a student in one grade indicates that the student can read grade-level-appropriate materials at a very high comprehension rate. The student may not have the background knowledge or maturity to understand material written for an older audience.
High School Level: Children ages 13 to 17, or 7th through 12th grades. Very often younger children and 6th graders read books at this level. This level uses adult structure and vocabulary.

The series is written at a Lexile level of 870L, meaning that an average 8th grader should be able to read these books with moderate ease.
Texts required for many postsecondary pursuits fall within a Lexile range of 1200L to 1400L, while the text complexity of typical high school textbooks for grades 11 and 12 is about 1050L to 1165L.
The average high school gradu- ate reads at 1150 Lexiles. College graduates can reach 1400 Lexiles. For many of us, the last grade of school we successfully complete defines our reading ability for the rest of our lives.
A Lexile reading measure can range from below 0L for early readers to above 2000L for advanced readers. Readers who score below 0L receive a BR for Beginning Reader. If you don't know your child's Lexile reader measure, ask their teacher.

Do grades matter in 7th grade?
When they ask that question, most people tend to mean how important are middle school grades in terms of college applications—do middle school grades affect college acceptances? In short, no. Colleges don't look at middle school grades when weighing a student's application.
The seventh grade is the eighth school year, the second or third year of middle school, and the first year of junior high school. Students are around 12-13 years old in this stage of education. Different terms and numbers are used in other parts of the world.
In 7th grade, students will fully understand how to interpret and compute all rational numbers. They can add, subtract, multiply, and divide all decimals and fractions, as well as represent percents.

While 15 to 20 minutes is the recommended amount of reading, it is important to note that, if your child is interested in and enjoying what she is reading, it is fine to encourage more time. However, we do not want children to become too tired.
In the 6th grade, higher performers should be looking to achieve Lexile scores of around 1000L by the end of the year, with the average scores being over 665L. Yearly growth in the 6th grade falls under 100L typically, with expected growth at 1.7L per week.

The Lexile scale runs from BR300 (Lexile) to above 2000L, though there is not an explicit bottom or top to the scale. Scores 0L and below are reported as BR (Beginning Reader). These books or students may be coded as Lexile: BR. In some cases, a student will receive a BR code followed by a number (e.g. Lexile: BR150L).
